10:55 pm - Memery as substitute for an actual update
[info - personal]jadesfire/[info]jadesfire2808 had a meme at her LJ:

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you. (Please note: If you simply wish to comment on something I've said but don't want to participate in the meme, that is fine. I will only give you five words if you specifically comment you with 'Words!')

The words she gave me were: dancing, music, writing, study and thinky, which I'm assured is a word )

05:04 pm - Memery
Meme picked up from [info]jadesfire2808, also known as [info] - personaljadesfire

The rules are simple, if you're interested leave a comment and I'll LJ stalk you to find THREE FANDOMS you apparently love. And then you answer these questions about them!

1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

Jades gave me Doctor Who, Firefly, and Highlander

05:18 pm - Fic (original): Once Upon A Time...
Title:Once Upon A Time
Author:[info] - personalxwingace, [info]xwingace
Word Count:~2000
Rating:PG
Warnings:Light femslash and butchering of fairytales.

Notes:My first and so far only original short story (for certain values of original). It was originally written for the doujinshi Bedtime Stories, a collection of fairytale-themed comics and illustrated short stories by the Dutch doujinshi-circle OpenMinded. It's been over a year since that was released, so I thought I might give this a little wider publication. This text is slightly reworked, and of course the original has illustrations. Not very good ones, though.

Credit: [info]dune_drd and [info]fenko for their betaing, and [info]ocreana, [info]sereighna (=[info] - personalseneris), [info]fenko and all the others at OpenMinded for their support and comments.

The science didn't make any sense*, but as a movie?

That was awesome.

* I don't reasonably expect warp travel, transporters or interstellar communication to make scientific sense anyway, but the physics of a supernova? That should make sense

10:32 pm - Fanfiction.net
You know what's funny about Fanfiction.net's character filter in the Doctor Who category?

Rose Tyler isn't on it (Astrid Peth is, which is in some ways even funnier...)

All this time and not one fangirl took it upon herself to correct this oversight with the FF.net mod(s)?

Ah well, I'm not going to be that fangirl either, in any case.

09:18 am - DW Invite Codes
I have a few invite codes going spare. Is anyone interested?

(I had one a few weeks ago, and someone claimed it, but it hasn't been used yet. Is there a problem?)

Comments are screened.

09:37 pm - Big Bang Theory
BF introduced me to this series a few weeks ago. It's absolutely hilarious. I also identify way too much with Sheldon...

But... where are all the girl geeks? I mean, Leslie's awesome, but she's not really a standard geek girl (and on screen far too little). And the less said about Penny, the better. I don't really dislike her, but she's the stereotypical prep girl thrown among the geeks, and she grates, sometimes.

Seriously, I just laughed so hard my mother came upstairs to see what was wrong with me.

Ah, Heroes, ever with the referencing of other fandoms... There are ways you can take this too far, you know...

Crossposting this from Dreamwidth. Everything should show up on LJ. I'm actually quite curious how comments are going to be handled from this.

05:52 pm
A few days ago, I registered my email with an OpenID account at Dreamwidth, mostly to comment on someone who had already transferred their journal and was taking comments there.

This morning, I found an email in my inbox telling me that I'd been picked out in a draw of people who'd registered an OpenID account, and given an invite code.

So now I have a Dreamwidth account. I'm [info] xwingace over there, too, just to keep things easy. And because I've gotten used to the name. I've been using it for eight years now, no need to change.

Also, people may gripe a lot about Fanfiction.net, but I really love the new crossover feature. Not least because I switched my fics over really early, and it's gotten me a lot of new readers, if the stats pages are to be believed. And a lot of adding to favourites, too. I'm not complaining about any of that. :-) I wouldn't mind a few actual reviews, though...

Anyone on my LJ flist who's also on Dreamwidth that I should go looking for? Recommendations for comms to join? I'm game.

And does anyone want an invite code? I've got one spare

Has anybody heard of this? I've been getting emails that I've been friended/invited, but I can't place the names of the people inviting me, and I've never heard of the site itself, either.

09:06 pm - Heroes 3.20 and Supernatural 4.16
Whoa, Heroes was great this week. Love Hiro and Ando. Not so sure that what they did to Tracy was necessary, though.

As for Supernatural, the show's on a great streak, I love this kind of darkness. Loved last week's, too. But... cut for spoilers )

10:04 am - Being Human 1.05 and 1.06
When did Being Human get this awesome? In the second half of episode 5, that's when.

I'd enjoyed the original pilot, and I liked the first four episodes of the actual series, but I did feel the series had been flagging a little. I hadn't managed to make it past the first half of episode 5 for two weeks.

Today I watched the whole thing. And the minute past the point where I'd turned off, the whole thing became first comedy genius, and then devolved into a dramatic cliffhanger. Boy, was I glad that I had the next episode standing ready.

And the last episode --- well, let's just say bravo Russel Tovey. Confident George had me cheering him along every step of the way. Werewolf transformation is still naff, though.

08:45 pm - I need to talk about this stuff
I think I'm going through a very shallow period. Some anime and manga I've watched/read recently that I want to make some remarks about. Cuts are for length, not really spoilers.
(Warning: any and all links lead to TV Tropes)

Manga:
Phoenix Wright Casefiles Vol. 1. ) Not recommended. Does anyone know some good fanart? Some that actually stays in the style of the game/cover art?

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad )I really hadn't expected to become this hooked on this series, but it's really engaging.

11:44 pm - LOM US
Life on Mars US is so much better when it's not trying to be LoM UK.

I miss Windy, though. Where did she go after the hiatus?

Edit: I'm posting this as I watch. Just after I'd hit post, they repeat a scene from the UK version verbatim again (for the first time in a few eps, actually) and prove my point.

09:01 am - Supernatural funny
I've been catching up on Supernatural. I've watched seasons 1&2 a few years ago (just before season 3 started, I think), but then couldn't be bothered to keep up with the next season. Now I have. Just two more episodes of season 4 to go and I'm caught up.

I like the (even) darker direction they're going in now, although some of the actions/reactions from people bother me in ways I can't quite define. Especially with regard to Sam's abilities.

But that's not why I posted this. I know I'm late with this, but the sixth episode of season 4 had an outtake at the end of Jensen Ackles acting/lip-synching to 'Eye of the Tiger', and it's bloody hilarious (the whole ep is pretty much Jensen playing it for laughs more than usual, too).

Internet fandom being internet fandom, of course it's up on youtube. No real spoilers for the episode

When I went looking for the clip, I also found this interview discussing how it came into existence (I hope the embed works). Although the outtake itself doesn't have spoilers, this interview does have a very mild one because they discuss more from the episode than just that outtake. Embedded under the cut. The outtake itself is also included at the end )

11:11 pm - Anyone happen to be a Preacher fan?
I've just finished reading the comic series 'Preacher', and I feel an urge to read some gen(ish) fic about it. Guess the one fandom that neither ficwad nor ff.net has a category for...
(I'm not really surprised -- I don't think the source material is all that well suited to fanfic, certainly not of the type allowed on ff.net. Still, that hasn't stopped anyone before).

A quick search of LJ interests didn't deliver either, only one comm that didn't really seem to do fanfic. I'll have another look tomorrow, but maybe someone on my flist has an idea? Please?

03:00 pm - It's been a while again, hasn't it?
Some less good news, depending on point of view: From 21st of december, I will no longer have a job. That's when my initial contract expires, and the company won't be extending it. Just like they won't be extending the contracts of about 99% of 'temporary' staff.

This could be worse, as I was already doubting that this was the right job for me, but still. Now I'll have to go through all of that again. And it's not as if jobs in my sector are all that numerous where I live (and I don't want to leave). Ah well.

On only slightly more cheerful matters: Einstein and Eddington )

08:07 pm - Anonynous Feedback Meme
I allow anonymous commenting, and I don't think I've ever bitten anyone's head off, either. Nevertheless:
Ever wonder if people are holding back from telling you what they really think of your writing?

It’s often hard to leave feedback in a public forum without censoring ourselves, or being afraid of offending somebody.

Here you can share the love, or air your true opinions without that pesky face-to-face (or ah, username-to-username) issue - the point is to be completely honest

Yes, I wonder.

[As requested by [info]sereighna, the commentary to my one and only truly unfinished fic that nevertheless ended up being posted. 04:46 pm - That's the easy part done, anyway.
I passed my driver's theory exam. Which was never the hard part, but I passed it on reading the book once, and without going to any classes, so I was a little worried, especially since I'd heard they changed the format since I last took it, eight years ago. Turns out they didn't really, not so much. And the part they did change, was only as a test, and wasn't counted in out scores.

Then when I came home, I found a lovely little cute Adipose waiting for me, courtesy of [info]dune_drd. Thanks! My phone now has a little white cube dangling from it. Is there anything I can do to reciprocate?

12:13 pm - The magazine collection at work put to a good purpose
It put me onto this site, which is really good fun for chemistry geeks and probably interesting for a lot of other people with just a little interest in chemistry.

http://www.periodicvideos.com

From here, there are links to short youtube videos done by the Nottingham University's chemistry department, all narrated by prof Martyn Poliakoff, and most containing videos demonstrating some interesting reaction of the element in question. The ones for the H-Li-Na-K-Rb-Cs-Fr series are particularly spectacular (even though those reactions are already quite well known for exactly that reason). Some of the others do have their moments, too, though, like the description of how the reactivity of Xenon was discovered. That really sounded like a 'Friday afternoon experiment', i.e. what the heck, it's the end of the week, let's try this.

There's also quite a spectacular video showing the reaction of some compound of zinc with air, but I'm not sure they actually say which it is. A name is mentioned, but they show some preparation steps after that, so I still don't know which compound it is.

In other news, while studying for my driver's theory test, I suddenly came across the 'Wet Gevaarlijke Stoffen'. Damn, my job keeps chasing me even on my notional day off!
